There is an area in our brain that responsible to convert short term memory into long term memory- that is our hippocampus. Hippocampus is part of limbic system, deals with emotion, motivation, liking..
3) Light meal. Drink 2 cup of tea per day. Caffeine and nicotine also help in memory. Thats y we c ppl smoking before study..and caffeine can improve memory when maximum 2 cups per day, high dose of caffeine will cause increase HCl secretion in stomach, leads to gastric ulcers.
There are only 2 ways we can achieve long term memory:
One is under subconscious level, decision of hippocampus to convert it based on our liking.
Another is by rehearsal of same information again &again to convert it into long term memory.
When we study so hard before exam day, we can convert the knowledge into immediate long term memory but it is of little or no use during exam time as you cant recall anything particular.
We need to study day by day, convert it into long term memory and revise it over and over again.
The same theory as we have to eat everyday, we cannot eat food for 3 days in 1 shot, it is impossible to digest all..=P
Hippocampus is the one that decide which information to be remember.
For example, when u meet a primary sch classmate after 20 years, u probably forget his or her name. But if ask u the name of the most beautiful girl in ur class, u may still remember her name..
Information associated with pain or pleasure will be remember better.
So first, we need to develop interest on a subject and motivate ourselves.
Second, by studying using multiple sense, when u r reading, at the same time, u can jot down keywords on a paper, speak out keyword..by using vision, writing, speaking and listening..we can remember what we read more easily,

4) Balanced diet. Milk contain almost all the nutrients we need. Before sleep take a glass of milk is a good habit. Our brain need neurotransmitters for neural synapse, these neurotransmitter eg. glycine, serotonin, melatonin, acetylcholine..are made from amino acid, esp tryptophan which is vr rich in milk.
5) We need 6-7 hours deep sleep. During exam, we study more, so we need at least 8 hrs sleep. We need deep sleep, that is non-REM sleep, which means sleep without dreaming, REM- rapid eye movement, when we dreaming, our eye move quickly and side to side..
Only during deep sleep, short term memory is converted to long term memory.
Right after we wake up, we should feel fresh, that indicates u have a good sleep. All the synaptic vesicles are filled with neurotransmitter, so our mind is fresh. The time after we wake up, is the best time to study. Take some tea, and start studying the most difficult subjects first, and then less difficult..
The minimum time to convert short term memory to long term memory is 5 minutes.
